Crônica Doméstica de um Sobrevivente / Domestic Chronicle of a Survivor
A minha semana começou bombando.
— Compre.
Me vi sem saída.
No supermercado, cada item lido me dava duas sensações:
Domestic Chronicle of a Survivor
My week started off with a bang. Now that is what I call a triumphant beginning.
In the early hours of Monday, I found out that our housekeeper wouldn’t be able to come, so I was handed an extremely important task, communicated to me ever so lovingly by my better half — or should I say, my whole half:
— Luciano, Fátima’s not coming. Clean the bathroom.
And what do you think I’d be crazy enough to answer to that? I felt like a gladiator in the Colosseum, with the emperor pointing his thumb down.
Well, after a quick scan of my privileged brain, I argued:
— Nero, sorry, I mean love, we actually need a broom to carry out this mission.
I said it hoping to delay the task for two days, the time it would take for Our Lady of Fátima to return, but her answer was crystal clear:
— Buy one.
I was cornered. Backed into the wall of the living room, while her eyebrow arched as if saying: “Is he insane or just pretending?”
I had no other choice but to search online for “how to make your bathroom shine and save yourself from the guillotine.” I found not only tips but also a full list of products to make the bathroom worthy of a royal flush from King Charles himself.
With the list in hand and my glasses on to read the fine print of each cleaning product that might save both my marriage and, by extension, my precious life, I set off to the supermarket like a true explorer — think the Villas-Bôas brothers.
At the store, each item I read gave me two sensations:
Joy, for finding a partner that would transform my life with the new title of King of the Bathroom.
Disappointment, for not being able to pawn all my assets in exchange for a gold nugget. That’s right, my friend and accomplice: the price of those products only confirmed what I already knew — everything made for the rich is good.
I also realized that, being the kind of consumer who regrets every purchase, I’d soon be back at the supermarket wanting to exchange the toilet freshener for lobster.
Well, my dearest readers — plural, just to see if I get lucky — I bought the same stuff we always use. It’ll look great, I’ll do my best, and I know I’ll be praised for the feat. After all, any smell is better than the smell of poop.
I know that when my love gets home, she’ll congratulate me for a job well done and, God willing, forgive me for the joke. Pray for me.
